Want to see just how important the draft is to a team? Check out DraftHistory.com. A look at the Lions' drafts of the late 90's will give you a pretty good idea of why they've been down for a while.
Also, Aaron noted that the Lions could trade down. I'd agree that this is probably a good strategy if possible, but unlikely because most seem to think there a few standouts in this draft. That being said, someone will surely trade somewhere in the first round.
