It's Good to Have the NFL Back

You've probably noticed that the sports-related posts around here have fallen off dramatically. That's because there just hasn't been that much interesting enough to me to be worth the effort. But now the NFL is back, so here's a quick summary of the first few days of free agency, mostly the ones with fantasy impact:

-DeAngelo Williams is staying with Carolina.

-Reggie Bush is going to Miami, and now that I've typed that sentence I have to post this:

-Kevin Kolb, displaced from Philadelphia by Michael Vick, is going to Arizona.

-Chad formerly Johnson has signed with the Patriots.

-Vince Young has signed with Philly, presumably to see if he can learn something from Vick.

-The Eagles also signed CB Nnamdi Asomugha, the best cornerback on the market.

-Brett Favre is still retired.

"Career Change"

Vince Young is talking about making a "career change" if the Titans want him to play behind Kerry Collins. I get that Young is frustrated, even though I can't blame the Titans for considering sticking with Collins since they went 13-3 and Vince had a few issues last year. My beef is all about language. I don't think he wants to make a "career change", more like a job change. What's he going to do, sell used cars in Austin?

Grow Up

A quote from Felicia Young from an AP article on Vince Young and his emotional issues:

But we’re not talking about football right now. We’re talking about what would make him happy, and that is the most important thing.

Oh grow up. Lots of people, myself included, aren't happy with their jobs, and most don't get paid millions of dollars to do them. We still show up to work, like adults. Spoiled children run and hide, which is exactly what Young is doing. I'm sure getting booed by an NFL crowd is no fun, but what else is he going to do? He hasn't finished his degree and I'd be surprised if he has any significant work experience. So stop crying and do your job.

One more thing: if your mom's talking about how you're "hurting inside and out" the the press, you just might have to turn in your man card.

UPDATE: By the time I finished typing this the article disappeared, replaced with a new one about how Young showed up to practice today. Good for him. The nearest I can find to the original article is this.

Be Afraid

So, you're thinking one of the young QBs from last year's draft might be a good sleeper to help you rule fantasy football this season. Don't bet on Vince Young. You see, he's been chosen to be on the cover of Madden '08. And there's a curse. That's right, he could be the next Daunte Culpepper. Good luck, Vince. You're gonna need it.

The (Not So) Mighty Quinn

Brady Quinn has an image problem. Scouts think he's slipped. Why? Well, there's no reason at all, really. He hasn't done anything since he's waiting for Notre Dame's pro day to show off his skills for the scouts. Still, he's falling behind JaMarcus Russell, who seems to be this years come-from-nowhere high draft pick. I predict Quinn will be the better QB in the long run, especially if Russell goes to the Raiders, but Russell looks to be on the path to a bigger payday.

Note: In all fairness about my picks, I should note that last year I was unimpressed with Vince Young and thought he was mostly hype and that he certainly wouldn't be a better QB than Matt Leinart. Results aren't in yet, but it gives you a point of reference.

Vince Young

After his performance the last 8 games, and after his large contribution to my team in the fantasy playoffs, I'm one step closer to being a believer in Vince Young. I'm not sure he'll be better in the long run than Leinart, but I don't know that he'll be worse either. Rookie of the year? Probably oughta be.
