Very few of the creative, artistic, Hollywood types can be bothered with actually coming up with ideas. When they try, you get all the hack movies with freshmen politics. So they pretty much are stuck with sequels, remakes, and mining books when they need to actually turn a profit.
So, Maverick takes over as an instructor and has to deal with a hotshot new pilot? I didn't read anything about it, I just assume that's the story. I guess it could be sort of entertaining in a late night don't-feel-like-going-to-bed kind of way, but it seems pretty pointless.
