Millen Done

Matt Millen has been relieved of his duties as GM of the Detroit Lions. The only surprise in this is that Ford Sr. actually pulled the trigger, perhaps pushed by his son's comments that he would fire Millen if it were up to him.

The Lions were 31-84 under Millen, so there's not a whole lot that can be said in his defense. That being said, I'm already a little annoyed reading some of the coverage, especially the topics of talent and drafting.

Talent: The News ran an article in the past week saying that the Lions had no talent at all. I'm no NFL expert, but it seems there were plenty of people picking the Lions to be pretty decent this year. Obviously they've started very poorly, and I doubt they're going to turn it around, but I can't believe the the team is completely awful. Big holes? Yeah. Should they be better? Definitely. But I don't think you can say the cupboard is bare.

Drafting: You can hold all the WRs picked against Millen. Taking that many WRs with top picks was not a wise move. But don't tell all the picks were bad. Charles Rogers was a good pick at the time, who made an impact in his first game... then got hurt. Joey Harrington didn't work out, but you can't fault the pick. Kevin Jones was great before he was injured, which is a possibility for an young back.

Maybe I'm just annoyed at all the joy at the firing. Sure, it needed to happen, but it'd be nice if the critics didn't feel the need to exaggerate to make a point.

Way to go Dad! The Lions were definately in a tough spot every draft...top draft positioning for "sexy" picks. 'Course, if they wouldn't have made those picks, those players would all be pro-bowlers for other teams.
