Quote of the Day

In one of those weird ironies of nature, being surrounded by a bunch of soapy-sponge-wielding attractive University of Alabama female zoology students in wet t-shirts is an excellent plot device for a late night cinemax movie when the subject "victim" getting a bath is a sensitive-yet-jocular ski instructor, but it's terrifying if you're a brown pelican.

Not A Coupon Insert

A great quote from a great article by Jonah Goldberg today:

The other side says that our rights come from God, not from government. That while the government has an obligation to promote the general welfare, it doesn’t have a holy writ to design the nation as it sees fit. The Constitution is not a coupon insert in your local paper, brimming with all sorts of giveaways and two-for-one deals. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights delineate what the government cannot do, not what it can. What was so fantastic and revolutionary about that is that for the first time in history, a nation was founded on the proposition that the government should mind its own business. Believing that doesn’t make you a fascist, it makes you a patriot.

Windfall

This article by Jonah Goldberg is the best thing I've read all week. Here's the first three sentences:

Imagine this. You’ve built the better mousetrap. (Because lasers and pneumatic tubes are cool, let’s imagine it uses them.)

You had me at "lasers and pnematic tubes". Seriously though, this is a great evisceration of Washington stupidity. Worth your time.

Quote of the Day

"Oh, let’s also point out that, as a matter of political reality, Clinton might as well be calling for a ban on the use of unicorn meat in dog food, because there is no way her proposal can actually, you know, happen."

Fred Thompson Facts

I haven't been following the Republican presidential nominee race all that carefully, but at the moment if I was going to vote I'd vote for Fred Thompson. So I decided to read this article by Jonah Goldberg at NRO this morning. It included some interesting facts from humor site IMAO, some of which I'll reproduce here:

-Fred Thompson once ended a filibuster by ripping out a senator’s heart and showing it to him before he died.

-Only two things can kill Superman: Kryptonite and Fred Thompson.

-Fred Thompson once stood on our south border and glared at Mexico. There was no illegal immigration for a month.

-Fred Thompson vows not only to win in Iraq but also to forcefully free Vietnam from Communism, thus giving America a perfect win/loss record for wars again.

-Fred Thompson often fills in for Paul Harvey and Batman.

-They say that after a nuclear blast, the only things that will survive will be cockroaches and Fred Thompson... except that Fred Thompson doesn't like cockroaches. So the only thing that will survive will be Fred Thompson.

-Fred Thompson kills at least one terrorist every day before he even has his first cup of coffee. You don't want to be the terrorist he kills before he gets his first cup of coffee.

-Fred Thompson's favorite color is the blood of his enemies.

You can see more fact about Fred Thompson at IMAO.
