Stars and Stripes

MLB teams will look a little different this weekend. That's because they will be wearing special "Stars and Stripes" caps (you can see the Detroit version on the left) as part of the Welcome Back Veterans initiative. Some proceeds from the sales of these caps will go to the fund. You can buy the Tigers cap here, or see all of them here. (Hat tip: John J. Miller at The Corner)

Independence Day

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.
-John Adams, from a letter to Abigail Adams.
(The Declaration of Independence was adopted officially two days later, hence Adams referring to the second rather than the fourth.)
